Matinée Recordings is a kind of sanctuary for endangered indiepop / twee artists from late eighties to late nineties, but sometimes one new band joins the family, it was the case for Maths and Physics Club, now this is the turn of The Hermit Crabs, from Glasgow, Scotland, with this 4-track EP soon to be followed by a full-length.

Formed January 2003, The Hermit Crabs are Melanie Whittle (songwriting, guitar, keyboards and vocals), John Ferguson (lead guitar), Des McKenna (bass) and Tony McDonald (drums). Recently, Francis MacDonald from Teenage Fanclub helps out with production. The four songs offered here are nice but not really spectacular, well-done classic indiepop tunes under the influence of bands like Camera Obscura or Belle & Sebastian. While I enjoy listening to their songs, especially the last track “I spend my time” and its twee introduction, it’s not really the kind of record or songwriting I’ll return to, it lacks some fragility or originality for my tastes.
